A song for an 80-year-old grandma that had the whole family in tears

Lucia had a dilemma: Grandma is turning 80. She's already received the classic gift (perfume, a scarf, a book) 50 times in her life. What do you give someone who's seen everything in life and already lost so many loved ones?

After two hours of scrolling through Pinterest, she found our site. "A personalized song?" she thought. "That's exactly the thing grandma never had."

The story she wrote us

"Grandma Margita was born in 1946 in a small village near Detva. She taught Slovak her whole life at an elementary school. Over morning coffee she always talked about her husband, who passed away 12 years ago. She was a quiet hero: she raised 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and now has 3 great-grandchildren too. She never complained, she just hugged us. I want to give her a song where her children are mentioned by name, where it's said how she was there for us through divorces, through losing jobs, through births. Let's try a folk song, that's her world."

How we created the song

Our team had 3 days. Slovak folk, female voice, accordion + cimbalom. The lyrics included:

• The names of all 4 children: Anna, Pavol, Eva, Mirka
• A memory of her husband Štefan ("the quiet man who built the house")
• A detail from the village near Detva ("a young bride came down from the hillside farms")
• A chorus about the "quiet hero" who never complained
• A line for each of the 9 grandchildren grandma raised

What happened at the party

Lucia and her family got grandma ready for her 80th birthday celebration at the family home. After dessert, the lights went out, they played the song from a laptop. The first notes of the accordion. Grandma looked up.

When her name came up in the first verse, she covered her mouth with her hands.

When Štefan's name came up in the second, she started crying.

When the chorus said "the quiet hero of Detva," the whole family cried with her.

3 generations. 25 people. No one held back tears.

What Lucia wrote us after the party

"Grandma begged us to play the song 20 times that evening. She sang the chorus out loud. She said it's the most beautiful gift she's ever received, and that when she's buried one day, she wants it played at her grave. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you're more than musicians. You're the storytellers of our lives."
